How to wrap a sofa for storage, step by step

A sofa is one of the biggest pieces in the home, and one of the easiest to scratch or cover in dust when it is moved and stored.
Wrapping it the right way protects it both times, and it does not take many tools.
The idea is simple: a layer of cloth protects the surface, film keeps the dust off, and cardboard protects the corners.
What do you need?
- Stretch film
- A cotton sheet or a cloth cover
- Pieces of cardboard for the corners
- Bags for the cushions and the screws
- Tape and a pen to write on the wrapping
Get the sofa ready
Take off any loose cushions and wipe the sofa down well, especially between the arms and the seat. If the legs come off, take them off and put them in a bag.
Before you wrap anything, make sure the fabric or leather is completely dry.
Wrap the cushions separately
Put each cushion in a clean bag or cover. That keeps them clean, and makes them easier to carry and arrange.
Cover the sofa with cloth
Lay a cotton sheet or a cloth cover over the whole sofa. This layer keeps the film away from the fabric or leather, so it does not stick and does not trap damp against it. Choose a clean, dry cover, because a damp one can pass moisture to the sofa.
Wrap it in stretch film
Start at the bottom and work up, covering every part: the arms, the back and the seat. A firm wrap stops the film from slipping, but do not pull it so tight that it presses on the fabric.
If the sofa comes in several pieces, wrap each piece on its own.
Protect the corners and edges
Put pieces of cardboard on the corners of the arms and the back before the last layer of film. Corners take most of the knocks when a sofa is carried.
Write on the wrapping
Write the name of the room on the wrapping, and a number for each piece if the sofa comes in several. That way you know where each piece goes when you set it up again.
Measure the way it will travel
The wrapping adds thickness to the sofa. Measure its width after wrapping, not before, and compare it with the doors and passages it has to pass through.
Store it the right way up
Put the sofa on a pallet or boards, off the floor, and do not put heavy things on top of it. Leave enough space around it for air and for the people carrying it.
Common mistakes
- Wrapping a sofa while it is still damp
- Putting film straight onto leather for a long time
- Pulling the film hard against the fabric
- Leaving the corners unprotected
